California DCA promotes consumer knowledge at NCPW event

The California Department of Consumer Affairs will be hosting our National Consumer Protection Week event on March 4. 

Please join us for an evening of information and education!  Speakers from the Contractors State License Board, the US Postal Inspection Service, the California Department of Business Oversight, and Covered California will be giving tips and ideas on how to use their programs and protect yourself from fraud.

Can you spot a government imposter?

Your caller ID says “FTC” or “IRS,” and the phone number has the “202” Washington, DC area code. You might even look the number up and see that it’s a real government phone number.

But the person calling isn’t really from the FTC, IRS, or any other agency. It’s a government imposter whose goal is to convince you to send money before you figure out it’s a scam. The big giveaway? The caller wants you to send money.

FTC, BBB and NY agencies name top consumer complaints, offer consumer tips during NCPW

FTC: Telemarketing scam stole money from older consumers

How low can scammers go? As low as stealing from older consumers to line their own pockets. The FTC says some scammers claimed to be calling on behalf of the government to verify information for a new Medicare card or Medicare-related package. “Pending FTC complaint” emails are fakes

Have you gotten an email with the subject line “Pending consumer complaint” that looks like it came from the FTC? The email warns that a complaint against you has been filed with the FTC. It asks you to click on a link or attachment for more information or to contact the FTC.

These emails pull out all the stops to look official: They have an FTC seal, references to the “Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA)” and a “formal investigation,” and what look like real FTC links. The truth is that they’re fakes. Continue Reading >
