Free NCPW 2013 Events in the Cleveland Area

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is once again marking its calendar for National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW). This year, NCPW will be March 3-9. Along with its federal, state, and local partners, the FTC will kickoff NCPW on Monday, March 4, 11:00 a.m., at Tower City in downtown Cleveland. Get FREE information and resources at the Tower City kickoff event or at any of these FREE local NCPW events:

 

Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. – 12 noon

What: Free Brief Advice and Referral Clinic at the Langston Hughes Center

Where: Senior Outreach Services, 2390 East 79th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 

A neighborhood clinic will be staffed for National Consumer Protection Week by Legal Aid Society attorneys, Ohio Attorney General, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, FTC, Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Mediation Program, Apprisen, Better Business Bureau and Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel.  You can get help with issues such as foreclosure, scams, and other civil (not criminal) matters including landlord-tenant, bankruptcy/debt, family law, expungement and public benefits.  A variety of self-help documents and other materials will be available at the clinic.

 

Monday, March 4, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

What: National Consumer Protection Week Kickoff Event and Press Conference

Where: Tower City, 230 Huron Road, Cleveland, Ohio

Press conference at 11 a.m. will include speakers from the FTC, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Cuyahoga County Office of the Executive Director, City of Cleveland Department of Development and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.  A consumer resource fair following the press event will include free educational materials and Q&A sessions with representatives from various law enforcement and community organizations, including:  Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Apprisen, Internal Revenue Service, IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, Social Security Administration, Pro Seniors, Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Postal Inspection Service, City of Cleveland Department of Community Development, Neighborhood Housing Services, Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Foreclosure Mediation Program, and Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel.

Where: Neighborhood Housing Services Consumer Law Center, 5700 Broadway Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio

Presentations and Q&A session with representatives from Neighborhood Housing Services and other government organizations.

 

Tuesday, March 5, 11:00 a.m.

What: Presentations and Free Consumer Resources for Seniors

Where: Gunning Park Golden Age Center, 16700 Puritas Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio

Representatives from law enforcement and community organizations will be on hand to answer general consumer questions on a variety of consumer protection issues.

 

Tuesday, March 5, 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

What: WKYC-TV3 Consumer Phone Bank

Call-in number will be provided during the broadcast. Representatives from law enforcement and community organizations will be on hand to answer calls regarding a variety of consumer protection issues.
